What Is Scaling and Root Planing?

For patients whose periodontal disease has progressed past the first stage (gingivitis), our skilled periodontists offer scaling and root planing (SRP) treatments. This is a nonsurgical procedure that is performed to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar deposits from the teeth. When the surface of the teeth has been smoothed with an SRP treatment, the gums will reattach to the root surfaces and decrease the depth of the gum pockets. Gum disease is caused by an accumulation of bacteria that resides underneath the gums, adding depth to the gum pockets and possibly leading to gum recession. Receiving SRP treatments from our experienced team is an effective way to remove the harmful bacteria and prevent the jawbone and gums from withstanding any further damage. If you experience any symptoms of gum disease, such as bleeding or inflamed gums and a receding gum lime, please contact our Pearland, TX office immediately. Made Ya Smile will give you the attentive and individualized care you need to improve your oral health.

When Is Scaling and Root Planing Needed?

You may be an ideal candidate for SRP if you are in a more advanced stage of periodontal disease, such as periodontitis or advanced periodontitis. This condition often leads to inflammation of the gums and bone loss around the teeth, leaving the support structures weak and unable to hold the teeth in place. To determine your candidacy for this treatment, our skilled periodontist will perform a thorough evaluation of your mouth and assess the depth of your gum pockets. They will also administer digital x-rays to determine if any loss of jawbone has occurred. Just some of the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease are red and inflamed gums, bad breath, gum or teeth sensitivity, and bleeding when brushing or flossing. Once your periodontal disease has been diagnosed, a customized SRP treatment plan may be recommended.

What Can I Expect With Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a nonsurgical procedure that takes place here in our office. We will numb the gum tissue to make you more comfortable throughout the process, and we may offer sedation for those who experience dental-related worries or anxieties. Once your comfort has been achieved and your gums are fully numb, a member of our team (either our periodontist or dental hygienist) will use state-of-the-art tools to delicately scale the teeth and remove the harmful bacteria that exists within the gum pockets. We may also place a local antibiotic along the gum line to control the growth of additional bacteria. Your SRP treatment may be completed in one or more appointments, depending on your severity of periodontitis and the number of teeth affected.

Recovery After Scaling and Root Planing Therapy

As you recover from your SRP treatment, you should avoid eating until the anesthetic has worn off. Your gums will likely be sensitive for the following days, but this is normal. The goal of SRP is to remove bacteria so the gum tissue can reattach to the root of the tooth, so it's important to keep your teeth healthy and clean by following a consistent dental hygiene routine that consists of brushing and flossing every day. Depending on your unique stage of gum disease and the number of teeth affected, you may need to come back to Made Ya Smile in Pearland, TX every 3 – 4 months for additional SRP appointments. This will all be outlined in your treatment plan during your initial consultation with our periodontist. You should also be sure to attend your annual dental examinations so we can continue to monitor your gums, teeth, and jaw.

Is Scaling and Root Planing Covered by Insurance?

Some of the costs of your SRP treatment may be covered by your insurance plan. To determine your coverage, we will get in touch with your provider and learn about your benefits. Our Pearland, TX office accepts most PPO insurance plans, and we also accept a range of payment options. To help make your dental care more affordable, a member of our team can explain your options for medical financing, including our in-house program and financing through CareCredit®.

Nonsurgical Gum Disease Treatment

Your gum disease can be managed as long as you follow a consistent dental hygiene routine. In order to improve the condition of your teeth, gums, and jaw and to prevent these structures from further deteriorating, SRP can remove harmful bacteria from beneath the gum pockets. Our team at Made Ya Smile in Pearland, TX is pleased to offer advanced and effective treatments for the maintenance of periodontal disease. If you think you may be showing signs of this condition, contact our office and schedule an appointment with one of our experienced periodontists.
